This is my final entry (of a total of six) over the life of Joseph. Joseph is the key figure in the final portion of the book of Genesis, and the Bible explains a lot about many details of his life. I have chosen to split Joseph’s life story into several blog entries because there is so much detail about Joseph’s life. Each portion of Joseph’s life is exciting and intriguing, and thus can hold the attention of children well. I think it is a good idea to share each portion of Joseph’s story separately with your children, but then after they have learned about the different events of his life, to do an entire lesson stringing all of the events in Joseph’s life together.
A great way to review Joseph’s story as well as help your children remember Joseph’s story is to have your children make a poster of each event in Joseph’s life. The posters can be then used to remind your children about the events in Joseph’s life. The posters can also be used as a game. Have your children play a game where they must put the events of Joseph’s life in order, or maybe have them play a game where they have to retell a portion of Joseph’s story.
Below I have listed the main events of Joseph’s life given in the Bible from Genesis 30-50.
- Joseph’s birth to Jacob and Rachel. (Genesis 30:22-24)
- The jealousy of Joseph’s brothers leads to sin. (Genesis 37)
- Joseph betrayed by his brothers. (Genesis 37)
- Joseph flees from sin (and Potiphar’s wife!). (Genesis 39)
- Joseph interprets dreams while in prison. (Genesis 40)
- Joseph interprets Pharaoh’s dreams. (Genesis 41)
- Joseph’s place of prominence in Egypt. (Genesis 41 – but throughout the end of Genesis)
Joseph reunited with his brothers and father. (Genesis 41-50)
Use Joseph’s story to teach your children about the providence of God. There were many times when Joseph struggled; however, Joseph always trusted in the Lord.
