Bigfoot or Big Hoax?

For about two months in the late 70’s I bought into the “Legend of Bigfoot”—I was eight years old at the time and my older brother had borrowed a book on the myths of Bigfoot from the library. It was all he could talk about for weeks. I thought about that book a few days ago–currently our city is all a stir about a recent Bigfoot sighting that occurred not far from here.

Typically, I dismiss these “water cooler” type stories, but yesterday the news ended up being picked up by various national media outlets. Let me back up… last week, a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources worker was on his normal rounds picking up a deer carcass from the side of a rural road and put it in his truck. He told reporters that he was in the cab of his truck when he felt the vehicle shake. When he looked back, he claims he saw a large, hairy monster leaning into the back of the truck. Startled by what he say, the DNR worker drove off, leaving the deer carcass, his equipment and the creature behind.

A few days later a well-known group called, “Searching for Big Foot, Inc.” got wind of the DNR worker’s story. Members were so intrigued that it sent a crew to Wisconsin from their headquarters in Florida to track down the creature. So now, in addition to the reports from the DNR worker, residents around here are a buzz because we’ve got Bigfoot “experts” in the area searching the Wisconsin woods for a large hairy “thing.”

“I wouldn’t have come out this far if I didn’t believe in what this guy said. I know that he saw something; he got scared,” a “Searching for Big Foot” team member told local reporters.

According to news reports, last night, trackers spread out, searching the woods near Highway 167. The trackers say they try to lure the creature with sound. They also look for physical signs. One crewmember didn’t find much Tuesday night, but he says he’s not surprised.

“I don’t think you have resident ones here, it could have been a migratory one,” he said.

In the end, it’s about solving the mystery, one way or another. “We kind of put closure to this thing for people and they feel a lot safer,” said “Searching For Big Foot team members.

Personally, I hope they find what they are looking for before Saturday—that’s when millions of hunters will take to the woods for the first day of the gun-deer hunting season.
