When it comes to scrapbooks does size really matter?
Traditional memory albums measure 12×12. However, a new survey shows that smaller scrapbooks are gaining in popularity. Among the most sought-after mini albums are: 4×4, 6×6, 8×8, 7.5×4.5 license plate albums, 8.5×11 D-ring albums, and 11×8.5 landscape binders.
According to scrapbooking insiders, it will be a long time before the12x12 album gets edged out of the top spot. Despite the influx of smaller books, the 12×12 remains the dominant size in the field. However, mini albums are coming on strong, in large part because an increasing number of crafters are seeing the benefits of working with smaller pages.
Beginner scrapbookers are particularly fond of the 8×8 size, as it is less intimidating to fill than a 12×12. In addition, an 8×8 album is the top choice for kids to work with, as it provides more room than a 6×6 mini album page, but is not as bulky as a traditional size page.
Working on a smaller book is also a great way to save money. Not only does it reduce the number of embellishments featured on a single page, but also trimming 12×12 paper down to an 8×8 size yields scrap paper that you can use to make decorations to add to future layouts. In addition, 8×8 albums are easier to display and store than the larger 12×12 books.
When crafting an 8×8 album, it is important to maximize the space on each page. To do this, keep your page designs clean and simple. Adding a slew of embellishments to a single layout often overwhelms the space and makes it hard to focus on a central theme. By including a few key elements, you can reinforce the theme of your page without going overboard.
Finally, if you find that you are struggling to tell your story in the limited space provided for with an 8×8 album, then experiment with a double page layout. This allows you to feature more photos and include some memorabilia, such as newspaper clippings, postcards, brochures, and ticket stubs.
