BIKE HELMETS – Safety First

Anytime you ride a bike, you should wear a helmet for safety. Unfortunately, people do realize that even a simple bump to the head can lead to devastating results. Therefore, before you ride, invest in protection. Too many cyclist have been seriously hurt from injuries that could have easily been avoided had a helmet been worn. Why chance it when you know you can enjoy a bike ride while remaining safe?

To give you an idea why bike helmets are so important, just 10 years ago, the Consumer Products Safety Commission stated that approximately 600,000 bike related injuries occurred in one year. In addition, the National Safety Council reports that more than 1,000 people die each year from bike related injuries. Of those deaths, more than 66% are directly related to head injury! You can avoid being a statistic by buying a quality helmet.

Obviously, you want a helmet that looks nice but one that is also comfortable. While older styles did not provide much comfort, the types of helmets available today are amazing. Modern day helmets are now designed with a significant amount of vents so you get great ventilation. In addition, helmets are lightweight, which means you do not have to carry any excess weight around. Then, the helmets made today are designed with retention systems and padding so, the helmet stays in place as you ride.

If you love to race, you can also buy aerodynamic styles. Keep in mind that you should check with your local state laws in that some states now mandate the wearing of bike helmets. Remember, you want comfort but even more, you want the right fit for the best level of safety and protection. Since helmets come in a wide array of sizes, styles, and price ranges, you will have no trouble finding one that fits perfectly.

To ensure helmets provide the right amount of protection, there are two primary bodies, which include Snell and ANSI. Regardless of the bike helmet you choose, make sure it is certified by one or both of these organizations. With this, you have the peace of mind that every ride will be the safest it can be. To ensure helmets stay safe, manufacturers are required to meet annual design updates. Therefore, to enjoy bike riding to the fullest, make sure you and every member of the family has the best fitting helmet possible.
