Biking and Walking Tours Of Europe

I look back at my years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with great fondness. However, I do have a couple of regrets–one being that I never took the opportunity as an undergraduate to participate in a European exchange program. I am now a mother to a young child and I fear it may be a while before I get the chance to fulfill my dream of visiting France, Switzerland, Austria, other European destinations I have longed to explore.

Of course, that hasn’t stopped me from earmarking some tours I would be interested in signing up for. If you are looking at spending time in Europe this year you may be interested in some of the information I have filed away.

Breakaway Adventures is a U.S.-based tour company that specializes in walking and cycling tours in Europe, and for the first time it is offering a number of combo tours featuring walking, cycling and other activities in one tour. For example, you can sign up for a tour of Austria that will allow you to participate in river rafting, mountain biking and boat trips.

If you prefer to tour France the company is currently offering these special package tours:

The “Amboise to Chenonceau Walk” includes two nights in a four-star châteaux. It features an easy-paced walk/cycle tour that starts out along the banks of the majestic Loire River, lined with the great royal châteaux, including Chenonceau and Amboise. The price starts at $1,643 per person and includes lodging and meals.

The “Jura Vineyard Trails” explores the Jura wine region, a network of medieval towns set against the dramatic backdrop of the Jura mountain range. The route takes you through two of France’s most famous villages – Baume les Messieurs and Chateau Chalon – known for their medieval ramparts, feudal castles and ancient abbeys. You will spend the night at three-star hotels and prices start at $1,785 per person.

The “Landscapes of the Luberon Walk” explores the Luberon National Park of Provence, an area that served as an inspiration for generations of poets, painters and writers. This walking/biking tour is rated “easy” and follows quiet country lanes with plenty of time to explore local villages, natural wonders and historic sights. The tour starts at $1,899 per person and includes lodging and meals.
