Looking for a loving little bird that is easy to train and loves human companionship? Take a look at the lovely South American sun conure! These birds wear a rainbow of colors — brilliant yellows, reds and oranges and vibrant blues and greens. The younger birds will not be as brightly colored as the adults; full color and plumage will develop by one year of age. Beaks and feet are black, and you’ll see distinctive white patches around each eye.
Sun conures can live more than twenty years — the average lifespan is between twenty-five and thirty years. They are colorful and intelligent, playful and affectionate, and make great companions for humans. Keep in mind that sun conures are VERY social animals and will need an owner who has lots of time to offer. A sun conure who feels neglected can become destructive and extremely vocal.
These birds are medium sized, and average about twelve inches in length from beak to tail when fully grown. Your sun conure cage should be at least twenty inches long and wide and two feet high. The cage should be at least big enough for your sun conure to flap his wings! Bigger is always better. Your sun conure will also need some out of cage time every day for flying, exploring, and playing. These are very active birds! Be sure to provide safe areas for your sun conure to investigate.
In the wild, sun conures eat fruit, nuts, and seeds. Your domesticated sun conure can eat a balanced pellet diet, available from your local pet supply store. Supplement your bird’s diet with fresh fruit and vegetables, seeds, and nuts as treats.
If you have the time to train and socialize a sun conure, you’ll find a charming, devoted companion for life! Sun conures can become family watch dogs — their loud and shrill calls can grab your attention very quickly. If you aren’t giving them enough attention, you’ll get an earful. These birds are not shy.
