Birdseed Pinecones – Wintertime craft project

Wintertime can be rough on our fine-feathered friends. The ground is often cold and hard and those tasty worms are not as readily available for aviary consumption. Your family can help the birds out and have a heck of a lot of fun in the process. Make a BIRDSEED PINECONE.

A Birdseed Pinecone will provide much needed wintertime food for the birds in your neighborhood (the birds will also appreciate your efforts during the other three seasons as well). They can be made easily and without much expense at all. This activity is loads of fun for kids of all ages.

Note: those with peanut allergies will want to find a sticky alternative or
avoid this one all together!

Here is what you need to make a Birdseed Pinecone:

1. Big, plump pine cones from your yard or Local Park.
2. Peanut Butter (feel free to use what you already have in the cabinets or purchase some of the store-brand/inexpensive kind.
3. A small bag of basic birdseed (most supermarkets stock birdseed).
4. Spoons – one per person.
5. A flat tray/container.
6. String/Yarn.
7. A tree/pole.

And here is what to do with those seven “ingredients”:
1. Before you even get started, scout out the perfect location for your birdseed pinecone to hang out – you should be looking for a healthy, low hanging branch, hammock pole, or lamppost to hang your creation. Ideally, you would like to place the finished product in a spot where it will be able to be enjoyed by the whole family (maybe just outside the dining room, so your kids can watch the birds eat while they sit at the dinner table).
2. Tie the string to the pinecone.
3. Fill up your container with the birdseed.
4. Lather up the pinecones with the gooey peanut butter. Ditch the spoons and use your hands, no need to be shy or skimpy at this juncture – have fun being messy! Your kids will!
5. Roll the peanut butter covered cones around in the seed.
6. Head outside and hang up our new bird feeders!
7. Enjoy knowing that you are helping to feed dozens of cute, colorful little birdies.
