Birthday Party Planning

My twins will turn nine in a few days. Like most children, they are very excited. And to them, Christmas was already a long time ago. Last weekend was a rush to plan their birthday party. I wish their birthday did not so closely follow Christmas. It’s hard for me to get motivated to plan for more things, when we still haven’t fully finished cleaning up from the holidays. Planning a party for twins is hard too. They have the same friends, so it’s silly to plan two. We have to find some thing we can all agree on.

I want their day to be special, without breaking our budget. The options for parties are overwhelming, and leave me nostalgic for simple cake and punch in the basement.

Besides, summer parties are so much easier to plan — swimming, water gun or water balloon fights, picnics, hiking, or a backyard campout. Winter parties are much more limited. We do have enough snow this year that we could probably host a sledding party. I’m just not sure I want to be responsible for the head injuries of the third grade class. Ice skating is out for the same reason.

So last weekend we looked at websites and made calls to indoor climbing walls, indoor entertainment centers, the zoo, arcades, and a laser tag place. I’ve never played laser tag, but my husband and boys assure me that it’s great fun. We can even bring in our cake and pizza.

The boys filled out their invitations last night. And yes, January and Laser were spelled wrong. I’ll save one for their scrapbooks. They handed out the invitations to friends after school. One of the mothers asked if she could come and play. She said she just tried laser tag and that it was great fun. I told her sure, if she’d teach me too. I like the idea of a party where parents and siblings can join in the fun.
