My little “baby” just turned two. I can hardly believe it. I still think of him as a baby, but now, he is turning into such a little boy. When we had his 2nd birthday, we kept it simple. We only invited family over, opened a few presents, and ate cake and ice cream. It was pretty much the same thing we did for his 1st birthday too.
For my daughter, she had a bigger birthday when she turned two. She had friends over, and we had a little slip n slide party in the backyard. I felt bad that my son’s 2nd birthday was not as big of a bash, but I’ve realized now that I have two kids that birthdays can be expensive, and when kids are babies, they are not going to remember the birthday anyway.
But, we all want to celebrate such momentous occasions, so what are some ideas for birthday parties for your 1 or 2 year old that are celebratory, but not too overboard?
*Make the cake yourself. Or better yet, make cupcakes. Kids love cupcakes and they are easier to manage at a younger age.
*Buy some balloons. This is an inexpensive way to decorate and entertain baby. At my daughter’s first birthday, we got balloons, and it was the first time she had ever had a chance to play with them. They were more of a hit than her presents.
*Have a party at a park. Kids love just running around, and having a little cake and ice cream afterward. WIth warmer weather in our future (we hope) this is a perfect way to celebrate, but not spend a lot of money or fuss over decorations.
*Limit the number of people you invite. Babies can get overwhelmed at a birthday party. Many have been known to cry when the birthday song is sung. So, keeping your numbers low will help your little one not have birthday overload when the party starts!
*For a family only party, try putting together a photo montage, or slide show of baby for entertainment. Grandma and Grandpa will surely enjoy looking at how much the baby has grown in a year or two. For a two year old’s birthday, break out the home videos, and watch them. Your toddler will love watching himself on TV, even if he doesn’t know that it’s him!
There are many ways to keep a birthday party low-key and simple. Just remember the purpose for the celebration, and that is to celebrate the life of a wonderful child, and have fun!
