What is Beadboard?

beadboardBeadboard, or wainscoting, is a type of paneling that can be used in many parts of your home. Read our beginner's guide for all things beadboard. Beadboard is a type of paneling that can be used in many parts of your home and for many purposes. It is characterized by a series of thin raised strips, or beads that flow along each panel. A very popular wall paneling in the 1920s, it was originally made out of scraps of wood and left unfinished, painted or stained.

Today’s beadboard is slightly different. You can find beadboard paneling in solid oak, pine, fir or MDF (which is a wood composite). Painted white or off white, it evokes the charm of a New England cottage by the shore. Paired with the right furnishings, beadboard can lend an air of elegance, especially when it appears in pure white and is paired with formal moldings. Painted in dusty blues or burgundy and pine greens, beadboard can give your home a country or rustic charm.

What areas of your home can you apply beadboard? The possibilities are many. Beadboard can be used traditionally for walls, of course. To update the look, consider adding it to one wall as an accent for a library or office, or adding the beadboard below a chair rail in a dining room.

It is also making a large comeback on desks, tables, cabinets and other furniture. Beadboard is especially popular in the bathroom, where its clean lines brighten and add interest to the smallest room in the house. The lines in beadboard can add height to a room. Just a few months ago, a bathroom vanity with beadboard detail on the cabinet caught my eye. And judging by the fact that there were three other similar finish bathroom vanities, I would say that beadboard is doing well as a design element.

Kitchen cabinets are also seeing a surge in beadboard. Adding beadboard to the cabinet faces is an easy way to dress up the kitchen for a new look. MDF beadboard is especially easy to work with, and it is relatively inexpensive.
