I confess, my blood sugar levels definitely affect my business operations. Perhaps that is rather uncool, and certainly not something you are likely to read about in one of the high-end business publications—but my productivity and temperament are directly related to what I have or have not eaten during the course of the work day…
I know that I cannot embark on a big project or sit down to a long-distance negotiating phone call on an empty stomach. As a matter of fact, even though I can jump-start my work day with a cup or two of coffee, I really should not do anything where I actually have to interact with other humans before I have had some protein and carbohydrates. When my blood sugar dips around mid-day and I start to feel irritated and impatient, I know that I had better not do anything major until I get a sandwich or some soup or even a big glass of milk into my body. Otherwise, who knows what sort of irresponsible decision-making I might commit?!
I have known people who could work all day on nothing but coffee and a candy bar. I’m here to tell you that not only would I NOT have a business, I would probably be on trial for some sort of sociopathic behaviors if I did not make some attempts to keep my blood sugar level. When the energy runs out from the food I’ve consumed, I cannot be held accountable for anything I might say or do—as much as I would like to be able to say that my business is held together with my brilliance and my level-headed problem-solving, it is really dependent on my ability to eat right and regularly, and to manage to keep my blood sugar levels reasonable!
