For years I’ve been telling myself I’ll take the Body-for-Life Challenge and actually finish this 12-week program. Well, my son is just about 18 months old and I still have baby fat to lose. He’s finally sleeping through most of the night, so I can’t use sleep as an excuse anymore. My last hurdle has been work. You know the line: “Oh, I’d exercise if I didn’t have so many deadlines to meet. I really need to get this work done.” Of course by the time you get the work done, the day is over and you’re wiped out so the last thing on your mind is exercise. Then there’s “What’ll I do with the kids while I’m exercising?
Well, I’m taking the challenge and I’m determined to really do it this time. What works for me may not work for you, but this is the extent I’ll go to in order to take back my body. Bear with me, this should be good for a laugh.
I get up between 3-5am every day to get my work done while my son sleeps until 7am. I’m able to make time for work, but not exercise? Sure, work buys the milk, but exercise is what is going to ensure I’m around for my son’s 50th birthday. I’ve been telling myself for months that if I could find a way to work and exercise at the same time, I’d do it. Well, today I was determined to find a way and I did.
I have a recumbent bike in my basement. It runs quietly and my arms are free so I could do my writing with the right hardware. I just moved, so I have loads of empty boxes. I put one large box on each side of the bike and a piece of wood over the top. The wood “tabletop” just clears my knees. Add a laptop to the tabletop and you have me – pedaling as I type. Yes, it CAN be done! I have free motivational podcasts by Bill Phillips to keep me company and a large bottle of water. I have no more excuses.
Change is never easy. It is uncomfortable and forces us to grow in one way or another. Unfortunately, some of us are in the position where if we don’t change, we’ll die well before our time. Think about some of the reasons you have to live a long life. Are they worth a little discomfort? I know mine are.
I finally have the HOWs and WHYs worked out, so I’m taking the Body-for-Life
Challenge and, rather than keep it a secret and suffer no shame if I quit, I’m telling you and hoping you’ll keep me honest. I’m also hoping you’ll take the challenge with me.
