One of my favorite types of magazines to look at for eye candy are Victorian decorating magazines. I love looking at the rich colors, the style and the flourish of a romantic bygone era. My husband, on the other hand, would want nothing to do with the dark heavy furniture or the preponderance of rose and lace, so I live vicariously through the magazines themselves. Besides, I have three kids who wouldn’t quite get the idea of the children’s hour, where they have nannies and are only allowed outside of the nursery for one hour a day.
Hollywood Glamor is another style that I find appealing to look at, if not practical to live in. The idea of long dressing gowns, bright red lipstick and sweeping organic shapes balanced by a bit of glitz just sounds exciting.
So, you can imagine my experience when I went into a quirky little store set in an old turn of the century house and run by Bam’s grandmother (of Jacka__) fame and spotted it. A vintage rose (of course) upholstered vanity set. yes, I thought, I could picture myself sitting here each evening, getting ready to go out for a glamourous night on the town. Never mind the fact that a night on the town these days consists of taking the kids for pizza or letting them stay up past bedtime to watch a summer movie at the park. Sigh.
Still, I thought, there is no reason why I should have to stand in front of the bathroom sink, precariously balancing my eyeliner on the corner of the toilet tank, while putting on makeup. Why not ease into the day with a more relaxing spot, such as a vanity?
So, I’m on the search for a more modest piece of furniture, a small desk or table with perhaps a hung mirror and a comfortable chair. In a month or so, I might add a feature boa or a small pretty tea cup that holds hair accessories. Ambience must be added in small stages.
