Book Review: “Are We There Yet?”

What is it with kids? Why do they have to ask, “are we there yet?” before you even back out the driveway? Okay maybe I’m exaggerating just a bit but I swear as I have traveled back and forth from Mobile to New Orleans this past year Tyler seems to grow more and more impatient with the amount of time it takes to drive this short distance. Mind you we’re talking a two hour drive but to him it seems like an eternity. So I was pleased to find on my weekly trip to the thrift shop this little book, “Are We There Yet?” Travel Games For Kids by Richard Salter.

This little book contains over fifty games for entertaining your kids. They can be played whether you’re driving across country or just across town. The book is organized by type of game such as number games, food games and color games. They even have a section on bad weather games. And you won’t need much in the way of supplies, generally just pen and paper. But you’ll sure to find something for everyone to enjoy.

Here are some of my favorites:

(1) Find 5 vehicles in any color you select.

(2) Get a female driver in another car to wave at you.

(3) Find a person sitting backwards in a vehicle, a male passenger smoking, a car with an “official” license plate, etc.

(5) See how many temporary license plates you can spot.

(6) Find a car with something on top of it, like a luggage rack.

(7) Chose a target vehicle, a bus, van, taxi, motorhome, and count the number of times you spot the target.

(8) Count the number of cars abandoned or stalled on the side of the road.

(9) If you have older kids, have them predict the exact time you will arrive at your destination in minutes, hours and seconds. Have them write their answer on a piece of paper and fold in half. The person who comes closer to the actual time gets a prize.

Traveling with kids can be fun and frustrating, what games do you play with your kids when you travel?
