Sometimes as moms we need a little spiritual guidance. I found this great little book for those times when I wonder if I’m doing the whole mama thing right. It’s called, God’s Promises for Mothers, compiled by Kay Wheeler.
What’s great about this book is it does not matter if you’re Baptist, Catholic or Methodist; this book is for moms of all religious backgrounds. It’s one of those pocket-sized books that you can carry around with you. In the back of the book there are spaces for you to write in birthdays so that you don’t forget the special people in your life. It also has several pages for you to write prayer notes.
The book starts out with mothers of the bible, followed by some really nice mothers’ prayers. I especially like the prayers because you can probably find a prayer appropriate to your particular need. From there the book is organized into sections that deal with specific challenges of being a mother. Sections include: the responsibility of being a mother, the blessings of motherhood and the promises of motherhood. Each of these sections is further divided into specific topics. For instance, in the responsibility section, you’ll find specific bible references to topics like discipline, love and morality.
There’s also a section on God’s answers for mothers. Here’s where you turn when you want to know such things as “How to overcome stress,” or “How to hold on to your faith.” There is also a nice section containing scripture meditations, with meditations for encouragement, hope, faith and more. Finally, there’s a section on how to deal with crisis in your life. Topics include how to deal with such pressing issues as anger, anxiety, loneliness and suffering.
This is a book that you will return to often. It’s great for new moms and old pros. I carry mine with me all the time, even when I’m not experiencing a major crisis in my life. For me it’s one of those timeless “feel good” books. It’s not a book that tells you what the “experts” say you should be thinking and feeling and doing. It’s a book of comfort and encouragement for all mothers who believe in a higher power.
