Book Review: Real Men Do Yoga

Although yoga is seen by some people as an exercise for women, nothing could be further from the truth. Some of the best known and loved yoga gurus throughout history have been men. Today, everyone from athletes to the average man enjoys the many benefits of yoga.

The book Real Men Do Yoga: 21 Star Athletes Reveal Their Secrets for Strength, Flexibility and Peak Performance is a great introduction to the practice of yoga for any man interested in giving it a try. If you are a man who has been wondering about the benefits of yoga or a woman interested in getting her man to give it a go, this book is a great choice.

The book focuses more on the physical benefits of yoga, including building strength, increasing flexibility and improving energy. The benefits of yoga for preventing sports injuries are also discussed.

The book shows how the practice of yoga combined with weight lifting and body building programs to increase results. Many weight lifters use yoga as a counter balance and complement to their weight lifting routine. Before I practiced at my current studio, I took classes at a local gym. There were several body builders who would regularly join the class to gain these benefits.

In addition to providing a wealth of information about the benefits of yoga, the book offers a beginning yoga practice that provides a good introduction for any man interested in trying yoga. The techniques and poses described in the book are easy to follow, even if you have never practiced yoga before.

The author, John Capouya, also provides more challenging versions of the poses for men who have mastered the beginner poses and want more challenge. He calls these super charged versions, using the vernacular of athletes and body building enthusiasts.
