Today I learned about a book and web site that could serve as resources for some stay – at – home – moms who love what they do, yet crave something more than caring for their homes and their families. MomsTown is a web site run by two women who are dedicated to inspiring moms to create the lives that they want. Both of the women, Heather Reider and Mary Goulet, were successful professionals in the corporate world prior to starting their families. Each of them enjoyed staying at home with her children, and each of them experienced a sort of “itch” after being home with the kids and out of work for a while that inspired them to figure out how to combine parenting with working from home.
As a part of their efforts, Mary and Heather have written a book, called “The MomsTown Guide to Getting It All”. If you are the type of person who enjoys reading step by step how – to books, you might enjoy this book. The book outlines a program for incorporating things other than home and family related tasks (such as owning your own business) into your life. As with any step – by – step program book, the message and the methods will resonate with some readers and not with others.
When I read the introduction to the book, I thought that it was going to focus on making the transition from stay – at – home mom and home maker to work – at – home mom and home maker. I found it to be more of a “total life makeover” kind of book, which does not really appeal to me because I tend to make my own life changes in my own way, not according to any sort of program. It’s also from 2005, so some of the suggestions and information are a little dated. I really wanted to like this book because in the introduction, there is a very positive overall message that women can combine their dreams of staying home to raise their children with their dreams of having successful careers. Unfortunately, the MomsTown web site looks to be a little thin on the type of content that I was looking for as well. Perhaps others will find it useful, though.
