Books for Beginning School

Before long, some of you will have a child beginning school for the very first time. Kindergarten is a wonderful and exciting experience.

There are many children’s books out there to help ease the fears about beginning school.

One of my personal favorite books is The Kissing Hand
by Audrey Penn. In the Kissing Hand, a young raccoon is nervous about attending school. His mother suggests that he take a part of her with him. She kisses the palm of his hand so he will know that she is always there. In return, the little raccoon kisses his mom’s hand too. There is also a sequel to the book, A Pocket Full of Kisses

In addition to The Kissing Hand, there are many other wonderful books to read. I have listed some of the books below. I suggest that you begin reading books about special milestones and beginning school. The more children understand about beginning school, the less apprehensive they will be when the time comes.

I Am Too Absolutely Small for School by Lauren Child.
This book features one of today’s popular Disney cartoon characters, Lola. Although Lola insists that she is too small for school, Charlie cleverly convinces her otherwise. Your child will love the pictures and familiar characters in the book!

When You Go to Kindergarten by James Howe
This is more of an informational type book. Children often find comfort in knowing what to expect. In addition to visiting your child’s school, this book can be much help. The book features various kindergarten classrooms and routines.

The Berenstain Bears Go to School by Stan and Jan Berenstain
The Berenstain Bears are an all time favorite for many children. In this story, Brother Bear is all ready for school but Sister Bear is uncertain. After visiting her school and meeting her teacher, her nerves are calmed a little. Once she sees friends on the bus and begins kindergarten activities, she is happy to be at school.

Reading books such as the ones listed above and completing activities to prepare your child to begin school is very important. These moments together can be very special for both of you!
