Books for Pet Lovers

With six shopping days left until Christmas, that doesn’t leave much time to get any last minute gifts you may need for the pet lovers on your list. It certainly eliminates ordering gifts online, but there’s always the bookstore.

Here’s a list of books you can’t go wrong with:

Fiction

Earlier this month Aimee profiled some great, classic fiction featuring animals that would delight any age pet lover on your list:

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH

Tailchaser’s Song

Watership Down

Others you might want to revisit include:

Black Beauty

National Velvet

For mystery lovers, dog and cat characters are regularly featured in series, such as these:

The Dog Who Knew Too Much: A Rachel Alexander and Dash Mystery by Carol Lea Benjamin

Murder on the Prowl by Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown (Features a corgi, Tee Tucker, who assists Mrs. Murphy, a crime-solving cat. My sister gave me a book by this author featuring these characters because of my Murph and his best friend Tucker. )

Nonfiction

You can find a book to delight almost any type of animal with the Chicken Soup series.

Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover’s Soul: Inspirational Stories About Horses and the People Who Love Them

Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover’s Soul II: Tales of Passion, Achievement and Devotion

Chicken Soup for the Cat & Dog Lover’s Soul: Celebrating Pets as Family with Stories about Cats, Dogs and Other Critters

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul: Stories of Canine Companionship, Comedy and Courage

Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover’s Soul: Stories of Feline Affection, Mystery and Charm

Know someone with a bad dog? Or think they have a bad dog? These books may make them reconsider that position:

Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog (I haven’t read it, but everyone I know who has says this is a great book. It made them laugh and cry and in general fall in love with Marley.)

Bad Dog, Marley! (A kid’s book based on the memoir mentioned above.)

Bad Dog: 278 Outspoken, Indecent, and Overdressed Dogs (I gave this to my sister because she needed a laugh and this book provided it.)

But let’s not leave out our feline friends. Here’s some books that address their particular quirks:

The Quotable Barn Cat

Bad Cat: 244 Not-So-Pretty Kitties and Cats Gone Bad

The Cat Behavior Answer Book: Practical Insights & Proven Solutions for Your Feline Questions

And of course we can’t ignore the training books. The two most popular trainers have these books to help us with any problems our pets may be having:

The Loved Dog: The Playful, Nonaggressive Way to Teach Your Dog Good Behavior

Cesar’s Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems

Be the Pack Leader: Use Cesar’s Way to Transform Your Dog…and Your Life
