Borders Books Bankruptcy

It’s been big news here in the Dallas Metroplex that Borders Books is closing 19 area stores. Borders is going through bankruptcy. I hate when I hear that stores I enjoy are in trouble. I’ve shopped at one of the stores that’s closing. What’s funny is when Starbucks announced that it was closing a large number of stores, more of them kept being built in our area. I am so happy that those stores opened.

I’m a reader. I grew up in a family of readers. Bookstores have always been a part of the places where I like to shop. B Dalton was in the mall when I was growing up and I loved to look around at all the choices. I love books. I love to keep books to remember what fun they were and have the option to re-read.

I read a comment that Amazon.com is to blame for Borders’ store closings. I don’t see how that’s possible. If Borders is your bookstore of choice, buyers can shop online with them too. Amazon sells everything. If Amazon is responsible for the demise of brick and mortar stores, than more than bookstores would be affected. Doesn’t everyone blame Walmart for that?

I love Amazon as much as the next person. It’s so easy to go there to price check; as I mentioned earlier, Amazon sells everything. But Amazon isn’t the only merchant to offer deep discounts on books; discounts that undercut the book prices at other retailers. I buy a lot of books at Costco. Costco has great kids books too.

I can buy books everywhere I go. I can buy discounted books at Walmart and Target. There is a nice selection of books at the grocery store. There’s a book I want at Tom Thumb that is cheaper than at Amazon.
