So the other day I blogged about kids getting Botox and I mentioned the interview done with a mom who has been giving her 8-year-old daughter Botox injections. Since then, the child has been taken away by Social Services.
Apparently complaints began pouring in, which resulted in an investigation and then a determination that the child should be removed from the home.
Now I have a few thoughts on this. First, why would any mother take the chance and put herself out there in the public eye to brag about the act of giving her daughter Botox? You would certainly have to question the intelligence of this. You would have to know that not everyone would agree with your choices. So I think her decision to do an interview was very, very foolish.
I also think that what she has been doing is very foolish. It is dangerous in so many ways and I am glad that at least attention was brought to it. Hopefully this will also serve as a wake-up call to other moms who are doing (or allowing) the same thing.
However, I don’t agree with the decision to remove the daughter from the home. I realize that some may disagree with me but I have seen that side of things and it isn’t very pretty.
I used to work at a preschool and I saw two children come and be removed by Social Services. I saw their devastation and the mother’s devastation. Were there problems? Definitely. Did it require removing the children? Since I ended up getting personally involved by eventually becoming their foster parents for a time, I’m not so sure.
The reason I say this is because sometimes the devastation of being ripped from a family can be much more traumatic than the problems within the home. Now I am not talking about abuse. Children who are physically or sexually abused, well that is an entirely different story. But the trauma of a child being taken from their home is quite devastating.
I think there could have been more done to begin to work with the mom. This is something that the 8-year-old daughter will never forget. It will be a life changing event in her life.
While I think the mother’s decisions were terrible, I just can’t agree with removing the child from her home. I sure hope something good comes out of all of this.
What are your thoughts on the whole thing?
