Learning something new helps to flex your mind and build your brain fitness up. So here are a few suggestions to help you learn something new:
- Take a Class
- Try a new hobby
- Read books
- Play games
I’d add join the PTA or become a room mom at your school to this list because in the last five weeks, I’ve definitely had my creativity stretched in a variety of ways. But let’s talk about each of these ideas above and how they can help you to learn something new.
Take a Class
Classes are offered in a variety of places on the net, in your local community and at colleges. You can even take workshops and classes at Michael’s and Home Depot. At my daughter’s dance school, they are offering adult tap dancing classes now — I’d be interested, but their scheduled class doesn’t mesh with my current schedule. Taking a class engages your brain and it’s good for you.
Take Up a New Hobby
Being creative takes a lot of brain power. Whether you enjoy writing, knitting, quilting or more – it’s important to use the different areas of the brain to try and figure some things out. Doing crafts with my daughter forces me to do think things through in a different fashion and it helps me to learn a lot more.
Read Books
Reading is a fantastic way to stimulate the brain. I love reading and I have a collection of over 500 books. Whenever I am starting to get overwhelmed and take notice that I haven’t read a new book in a while – I go and get one whether I check it out of the library, borrow it from a friend or buy it at the bookstore. A new book is a great way to get my brain engaged again.
Play a Game
Whether you like Risk or Scrabble or old fashioned gin rummy, playing a game requires the use of strategy and helps you to think outside of the box. You can take the challenge up against yourself or against an opposing player or more. One of our favorite family games to play around here is Taboo – trying to get your partner to guess something without mentioning five key words, phrases or descriptives.
