Bread Bags

A few days ago was National Homemade bread day. Hailey loves homemade bread and I have some really easy recipes but sadly I don’t make it as often as I could. Or at least not as often as Hailey would like. I don’t like bread sitting on the counter in plastic so I thought I would whip up some bread bags while the bread was baking. These are quick and easy, you will easily finish them while the bread is baking.

All you need to make these is some fabric and a sewing machine. I had some fat quarters laying around that were perfect. You will need a piece of fabric cut 18” by 15” and another cut 1 ½” by 18” for the tie.

To make the tie first hem the short ends, just turn under once and hem, this will be hidden so no need to finish it off nicely. Then iron the long edges into the middle and iron the strip in half. Sew the long edge this finishes all the edges of the tie.

For the bag, fold on end of the short side under twice, iron and hem. This will be the open edge of the bag. Now fold the bag in half, right sides together and put your tie about three inches from the open end of the bag so the tie is sewn in the seam. You can see the tie sticking out the edge of the seam in the picture.

Sew the seam and use either your serger or a zig zag stitch to finish off the seam so you don’t have any strings. Turn it out and your bread bag is ready to go. I find that with this bag I just need to put plastic wrap over the cut end of the bread and my bread stays nice and fresh.

These bags are also great to use for bread that you are giving as gifts. You can match them to the holiday or to the gift recipients kitchen. And because the tie is sewn into the seam you won’t ever lose it.
