In the previous article, Breadmaker Breakdown of Savings (1), I started talking about a breadmaker can be a great small appliance for saving money. Making bread is fun and frugal, but there are also so many other foods that can be made in it. Sometimes this depends on the features that the breadmaker model has, but anything having to do with dough can usually be made in even the most basic models.
Here is a continuing breakdown of the savings that you can expect when you use your breadmaker. These prices are based on what is in my area. You may pay more or less for comparable foodstuffs.
Bagels are one of my favorite things to make in the breadmaker. If I add toppings such as sea salt, my cost is about 29 cents for a batch of six large bagels. That would cost me between $3 and $6 at the bakery.
An order of bread sticks can be had at the local pizza store for $1.99 or the supermarket for 99 cents for the generic brand. I can make a double order out of pizza dough for 29 cents, so a single order would cost me 14.5 cents. And that pizza dough can be used to make calzones, too.
Deserts, such as cakes and brownies can be made in some types of bread makers, too. I can’t compare this directly, since deserts vary so widely by the type of desert, etc., but to just take one example, a chocolate cake loaf would cost me about 79 cents or less in ingredients. And we can’t forget about desert breads!
And don’t forget quick breads. I can compare this one if I take corn bread as the example. A home made corn bread in the breadmaker cost me a mere 14 cents, including sugar. A loaf of pre-made corn bread from the deli section of the grocery store is priced at $2.25 and is about one third of the size.
