Break the Paycheck to Paycheck Cycle

How can you break the cycle of living from paycheck to paycheck? It is an awful feeling to know that you need the next paycheck to come in so that you can pay groceries and cover your bills for the month. It can be quite stressful to be counting your pennies and just hoping that your car won’t break down or that some other disaster won’t hit. So how can you break that cycle? Here are five steps that you can take to stop living from paycheck to paycheck.

1) Start by living within your means. At first you may feel like you have lost a lot of spending power, or the belt may feel tighter, especially if you have been relying heavily on credit cards. It is important that you spend less than you make if you want to begin saving money and get to a place where you do not need to worry.

2) Start paying off your debt as aggressively as possible. This may mean cutting back your expenses even further. It may mean that you find a second job or another source of income. It may mean that you sacrifice your vacations for a short period of time. When you stop paying interest to others, you will find that you can stop worrying as much.

3) Begin to save money. Once you have gotten out of debt you can begin saving an emergency fund to cover unexpected expenses or to cover you if you were to lose your job. You can also begin to set up sinking funds so that you have money to complete home improvements, buy a new car or go on vacation.

4) Once you have done this it is important to begin to plan for retirement. By saving money and building your wealth, you will find that you really are not dependent on the next paycheck to come in. It is important that you still earn money, but the world will not come to an end if you find yourself without a job suddenly.

5) After you have completed all these steps, it is still important to make sure that you are living within your means. You do not want all of your sacrifice and hard work to go to waste, because you became too lax in your spending habits.
