Break Up of a “NON-Couple”

They are a couple. They aren’t a couple. They are “just” friends. They are “more than friends.” It’s enough to make your head spin. At least that’s the way I feel when I read about Heather Locklear and David Spade’s relationship. Now, PEOPLE Magazine is reporting that the pair is “taking a break from their relationship.” So, what does that mean?

“Heather is still going through a lot with Denise (Richards) and (estranged husband) Richie (Sambora),” the magazine quotes an unidentified source. “It’s just too soon for her to get serious. They are still friends. It’s not ugly.”

Another source close to Spade says that the break “was a mutual decision.”

Okay, are you as confused as I am? “It’s just too soon for her to get serious.” I thought they weren’t serious. “They are still friends.” I thought they were “just friends.” So, why wouldn’t they still be “friends?” It “was a mutual decision.” What was–the break up? I thought they said they weren’t a “couple?”

Here’s what I do know. Locklear and Spade have been documented cuddling, holding hands and kissing in several entertainment magazines over the last several months. And while they have not publicly addressed the status of their relationship their friends haven’t been shy about telling reporters that the two are “just pals.”

“They are friends. They’ve always been friends. And they continue to be friends,” a source close to Locklear has told PEOPLE. “There’s nothing more to it than that.”

Then what of this whole “taking a break” report? If their relationship was nothing more than “that,” then what exactly are they taking a “break” from? According to PEOPLE, Locklear and Spade were first spotted displaying signs of public affection at “an afterparty for Spade’s Showbiz Show in March – a month after Locklear filed for divorce from Sambora.”

Back then, friends of the couple said Locklear and Spade had been “spending time together,” but that things hadn’t reached the “dating” stage. Two months later, after more photos of the two cuddling and smooching went public, friends of Locklear told PEOPLE that the former “Melrose Place” star and Spade were not a couple, but that “the comedian had been a source of comfort – and more than a few laughs – during tough times.”

Now, the latest is that the couple… or non-couple is taking a “break.” Again, I ask a break from what? Being caught in public kissing and hugging?
