I guess I have an entrepreneurial spirit at the very core of me. Not only do I really dislike being told what to do, but I also find that the minute someone tells me that “this is the rule” or “this is the way things need to be done,” I start looking for a new and different way to do things. When doing a little self-exploration, I’m not sure now if it’s an entrepreneurial spirit or sheer stubbornness, but I do find that breaking the rules can be a bonus in starting and running a home business…
I’m not advocating anarchy here, but I think that finding new, better, different and more efficient ways of doing things can be a real bonus in starting a new business. After all, we do need to differentiate ourselves from the competition AND, what’s the point of running our home business like a corporation! Even in my consulting and other work, I find that I just naturally start looking for ways to grow and expand and do things bigger and better. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t tried and true methods and some basic professional considerations, but overall—improvements and innovation occur when we refuse to take things as they are.
And, I think creativity goes hand-in-hand with a willingness to break the rules now and then. By letting ourselves think outside the box and color outside the lines, we may find our creative juices flowing. Breaking the rules can definitely help expand our problem-solving skills as well (again, I’m not advocated criminal behavior, just stretching beyond the constraints of “this is how things are done.”)
So, go ahead, I’m giving you permission. Now that you’re on your own and you’ve started your own home business—break the rules, try something new, or at least you can bend the rules a little…
