Brighten Up Your Eyes

There is nothing worse than waking up in the morning and taking a look at yourself in the mirror when you have lacked adequate sleep. Sadly, this is the case for me almost every morning. I have two main reasons for the lack of adequate sleep.

First, I am teetering on the edge of menopause. I have been dealing with premenopause for several years and now it seems I am following in my mother’s footsteps. She was completely through menopause in her early 40’s. Trouble sleeping is something that usually goes along with this stage in a woman’s life. I am either dealing with night sweats and hot flashes, or just the restlessness that seems to come with menopause.

Second, I stay up too late. That is completely my own fault. Most nights I like to watch TV while in bed but then I have trouble turning it off, or I am reading a good book that I don’t want to put down. By 9:00 I am usually tired and ready to go to sleep but once I get in bed and turn on that TV or open that book, I get a second wind. Yes, I have tried keeping the TV off and leaving the book beside my nightstand but then I lay there staring at the ceiling.

At any rate, I lack adequate sleep virtually everyday. So looking in the mirror at my sad, tired eyes is not exactly appealing. However, I have learned how to brighten my eyes, which is great for those mornings I have not slept so well the night before.

First, I apply a medium shade of eye shadow (I prefer browns) to my lids. I should also mention that I do this with q-tips. Q-tips seem to work the best for me in applying eye shadow where I want it. Then I apply a lighter color on the rest of my eye, up to my eyebrow. In the crease of my eye I apply a darker shade of eye shadow. The browns seem to give me a “smoky” look that helps take away attention from any shadows under the eyes.

Then I put on some eyeliner, not a lot. I apply a pretty thin line of it, just enough to barely notice it. To finish the look, I use mascara that creates longer lashes. The longer lashes help to make your eyes look brighter.

The eye makeup really does make a difference and makes my eyes look brighter. Despite my lack of sleep, others don’t even notice.
