Bringing in the outside

My girl ran to the first dandelion to appear in our front yard this spring and promptly yanked it out. No, she was not weeding for me that was just a pleasant byproduct of her excitement for springtime. She carried that little yellow symbol of both April and a messy yard all the way to the market and back home again, even though the time spent in the hot car while we shopped made the weed a limp and sad shell of what it once was.

When we arrived home, I ran around our side yard, which was covered in dandelions and pulled out a dozen or so. I affixed a rubber band around the stems and made a little Dandelion bouquet. I placed that scruffy yellow bunch in a small vase and put it on her dresser as a naptime surprise. This discovery, of the outside coming into her room made her extremely pleased with me. When she awoke from her nap, she told me she dreamed of her flower garden and of dancing ballet in a field filled with dandelions (she did not have to imagine that field for very long – within days it became a reality in our backyard!)

Bringing the outside, inside can really spruce up your home, making the indoor space more aromatic, bright and colorful. Having flowers around may also fill your family with a renewed sense of well-being and calm – flowers, being living, breathing things themselves, tend to have a positive affect on mood and personality. I know that I am a sunnier fellow when I have them in my sights at home or in the office.

Having flowers and plants around the home is fun for kids, especially if you can find space in their room for a hanging basket or a simple vase of vibrant red tulips, lovely lavender lilacs or sunny yellow weeds!
