Those Spears girls sure know how to make the media’s day…
Britney Spears is about to be an aunt.
Sixteen-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears has announced to the world (via a 6-page spread in OK! magazine) that she is 12 weeks pregnant and the father of her child is her longtime on-again-off-again boyfriend Casey Aldridge—-a boy she met in church.
In real life Jamie Lynn is a high school junior who is 10 years younger than her popwreck star sister Britney. On TV the teen stars as a schoolgirl at the fictitious Pacific Coast Academy in Nickelodeon’s popular “Zoey 101.”
Executives at the all-kids network issued this statement after learning about Jamie Lynn’s impending new role as a mom: “We respect Jamie Lynn’s decision to take responsibility in this sensitive and personal situation. We know this is a very difficult time for her and her family, and our primary concern right now is for Jamie Lynn’s well being.”
Jamie Lynn told the magazine that the pregnancy was unplanned and it took her and her boyfriend a while to come to terms with the situation.
“It was a shock for both of us, so unexpected,” Jamie Lynn told OK!. “I was in complete and total shock and so was he.”
Spears also revealed that she confirmed the pregnancy with a home test and a subsequent doctor’s visit, and then shared the news with only one friend. The teen said she then waited a couple weeks before sharing the news with her parents just before Thanksgiving.
“I needed to work out what I would do for myself before I let anyone’s opinion affect my decision,” she told the magazine. “Then I told my parents and my friends. I was scared, but I had to do what was right for me.”
As for her mother’s reaction, Lynne Spears admits to the magazine that she was beyond shocked.
“I didn’t believe it because Jamie Lynn’s always been so conscientious,” Lynne Spears, told OK!. “She’s never late for her curfew. I was in shock. I mean, this is my 16-year-old baby.”
Once Lynne got used to the fact that she was going to be a grandma for the third time in less than three years she put the spin-doctors to work.
Jamie Lynn’s parents reportedly met with Aldridge’s parents, they notified Nickelodeon, and secured the interview with OK!
The magazine says Jamie Lynn’s story sends a message to other teens about premarital sex.
“I definitely don’t think it’s something you should do; it’s better to wait,” the 16-year-old mom-to-be told the magazine. “But I can’t be judgmental because it’s a position I put myself in.”
As for where she plans to raise the baby, Jamie Lynn says that’s a no-brainer. The child will be brought up in her home state of Louisiana – “so it can have a normal family life.”
