I’m not referring to the pop star’s sprawling beachfront Malibu pad that she shares with her two sons (when she’s allowed to see them). I’m talking about Brit’s rehab digs–Malibu Promises. The rehabilitation center to the stars (other unsuccessful alum include Lindsay Lohan) was forced to move staff members and about 20 patients as flames from the massive Southern California wildfires crept closer to the facility.
Promises CEO told news reporters staff members evacuated everyone from the premises after the power went out and they could see flames coming over the mountain. Patients were reportedly relocated to an “upscale hotel” near another Promises facility in west Los Angeles.
I’m surprised they found rooms. Several news agencies have been reporting that luxury hotel rooms have been hard to come by since fires began ripping through the wealthy Malibu community. According to managers at high end Shutters on the Beach, the Viceroy in Santa Monica, the Beverly Hills’ Peninsula and Four Seasons hotels, the properties are booked solid with wealthy guests who fled the fires in Malibu and San Diego. Among the rich and famous being run out of their upscale neighborhoods into the confines of posh hotels, include Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Nick Nolte, Mel Brooks, and Ryan O’Neal.
Malibu resident and current “Dancing with the Stars” contestant Jane Seymour told PEOPLE magazine her husband couldn’t make it to the show to watch her compete this week because their home is in the path of the fast moving flames.
“The fire is close to our home, and there was a mandatory evacuation. My husband is illegally there, fighting the fire,” Seymour told the magazine.
On a brighter note, Hollywood mogul David Geffen made headlines yesterday when he opened his renovated Malibu Beach Inn to firefighters and rescue workers for free.
And, it’s not business as usual for some Hollywood productions. As I mentioned in a previous blog, several TV shows, including Fox’s “24” halted location shoots because of the fire. Today, Variety reported CBS’ “NCIS” joined the growing list of shows affected by the massive blaze. The hit CBS drama, which shoots at a Santa Clarita studio near the so-called Magic Fire in northern Los Angeles County, rescheduled production to accommodate crew members dealing with fire-related issues.
