Bubble Science Day
Bubbles never cease to fascinate children. It is a simple joy that carries many science and math lessons. The best way to learn about science and math is to experience it. Zometool provides the tools that can open a new door of understanding in both areas. So, armed with the Bubble Bundle, I sought to bring wonder and learning to my homeschool co-op. The mention of bubbles caused a mix of reactions. Some of the kids were excited while others wondered if I thought I was teaching a preschool class. Oh these little naysayers had no idea what was in store for them.
The Bubble-ology book contains six activities that take one to two 45 minute sessions. Aerodynamics, surface tension, and chemical composition, barely scratch the surface of what the students will learn. The book makes an excellent unit study for your own children or a series for a homeschool co-op. The activities are engaging, and forgive me, will have the kids bubbling over in excitement. However, the element that caused the gasps and pleading to get their hands on was the Creator 1 kit that comes with the Bubble Bundle.
Creator 1 enables a child to explore a new level of math. It visually connects the physical and conceptual part of math to create a true understanding and appreciation for the subject that baffles many. The kit provides the materials to create models and structures that will amaze. You can even create models you can dip in bubble solution and see magical colors and bubble shapes. You can even blow bubbles through the Zometool model.
The introduction of the Creator 1 kit was a huge hit. The kids loved dipping models they made in the bubble solution. They also loved building the models. It was then that something amazing happened; an interest in math and science was sparked. A true desire to learn more for the purpose of application was cultivated. The children began to apply other areas of math and science previously learned to building models. No more little naysayers these elementary students were fascinated and greatly anticipated the next meeting.
“I want these for Christmas!” –Tyler, 8
“Brilliant! Need these to assist in our unit on molecules.” –Mom
“Maybe your mom will buy you some.” –My daughter’s response when a child asked if he could take Creator 1 home.
Learning should foster a curiosity about the world and reinforce a sense of wonder. The Zometool is one of those rare items that does just that! I use it for many areas of math and science for my 7 year old and my 12 year old.
I wanted to share something special with my co-op and now with you as well. ZomeTool is offering free shipping and a 15% discount on their products until November 30th. Use code: Families (case sensitive) when you check out. I have a few gifts in mind myself!
