If you have ever wanted to travel to Mexico to celebrate the Oaxaca Day of the Dead, but could not make room in your budget to do so now is your chance. G.A.P Adventures is offering an amazing deal on travel to Mexico City in late October for the massive celebration. For $1,200 you will receive 10-nights’ hotel accommodations, local transportation by public bus and taxi, two local flights, sightseeing excursions, and the services of an English speaking G.A.P Adventures leader throughout the trip.
The rate breaks down to about $110 per person per night. As part of the package deal you will stay at the modest, 150-room Hotel Mallorca in the Colonia San Rafael neighborhood. You will also be given a tour of Oaxaca, which is known for its colorful markets and the Zapotec ruins of Monte Albán. The colonial city is known for its food and art.
After a night in Oaxaca, you’ll take a 40-minute flight to Puerto Escondido, a Pacific coast town known as “the Mexican Pipeline,” where you’ll stay two nights. The area’s beaches are known the world over and you will have ample time to catch some rays and try your hand surfing.
The trip also includes a visit to Mazunte, a quiet beach town just west of Puerto Ángel. During your two-night stay there, you’ll visit the National Mexican Turtle Center, where a variety of baby sea turtles live in an aquarium until they are strong enough to survive in the ocean on their own.
Following your tour of Mazunte you will catch a short flight (about 35-40 minutes long) back to Oaxaca, where you’ll spend four nights. A sightseeing tour includes a stop at a local market to watch as residents stock up on goods in preparation for the Day of the Dead. During the three-day holiday from October 31 through November 2, people honor the lives of deceased relatives and friends and celebrate their return with food and dance. You will get a front row seat to all of the festivities, including being bussed to a local cemetery to watch as Mexicans decorate graves in honor of the holiday.
