Did I ever tell you about the time I was forced to stay in a motel near the Honolulu International Airport (my flight was delayed and the airline bussed us to the nearest lodging) and ended up sharing my room with a family of cockroaches?
Yes, it was a budget motel. But, no, I didn’t expect to be encroaching on the roaches’ space.
Budget properties are known for their… well, hmm… how should I put this? Basic accommodations. But, that was then. Now some low-price chains are trying to shake their cheap image and replace it with a chicer one.
Motel 6, the reigning king of inexpensive lodgings, is getting a makeover. And it isn’t alone. Two other popular roadside chains—-Super 8 and Red Roof Inns—-also have similar plans in the works.
But budget travelers needn’t worry; execs from each of the chains say the new designs won’t mean higher prices will follow.
So what do these motel makeovers consist of? Think flat-screen TVs, granite bathroom countertops and unique furnishings not typically associated with low-price accommodations.
According to Motel 6’s CEO, the upcoming renovations will be the chain’s first in more than a decade. Soon, it will be out with the dated multi-colored bedspreads and in with new bedding in sophisticated tones such as cinnamon and olive, which will complement an accent wall. In the new bathrooms guests can look for white vessel sinks that will sit atop black granite countertops. Also, the carpets will be replaced by quasi-wood flooring, and new, contemporary furnishings will be added along with 32-inch flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi access in each room.
Despite the upscale remodel, Motel 6 execs maintain that they will continue their low-rate strategy; cost of an average room last year was $45.26.
Expect the same at Red Roof Inns. The chain is overhauling its properties to include clean, modern rooms with minimalist bedding, granite counters, and 32-inch flat-screen TVs. The first of the new Red Roofs is expected to open this year in Columbus, Ohio.
The renovations to Motel 6 rooms will begin this summer.
