Building a Deck?

We built a deck shortly after moving here, so it was probably around eight years ago. I’m actually surprised it lasted as long as it did, but it’s about time for a new one. We “winged it” the last time, and while it’s not perfect, it really wasn’t too bad. This time, however, we hope to build a better one and we don’t intend to replace it any time soon, so we want to do it right.

I’ve been researching deck plans, tools, and materials and there is some great stuff out there. For example, some home improvement centers offer a system that helps determine exactly how many pieces and which sizes of lumber are needed. It will help you figure out everything you need and what the approximate cost will be. Pretty cool.

I have been learning about new decking materials. I heard of vinyl decking and it sounded like a good idea but it seems as if too many different tools as well as different hardware is necessary for installation.

Some materials are only available for the actual decking (floor) and not for the rest of the structure, but there’s a newer product that’s made from a wood and plastic combination. It is said to be long lasting, nearly maintenance free, and simple to work with using ordinary tools and hardware. It has the look of real wood, minus the splinters.

There are different colors available or you can stick with natural tones. You don’t have to use sealer and it won’t warp. It is also said to be immune to decay and pests. These materials tend to cost a little more than treated lumber, but they seem to be the better value, especially if you end up never having to replace your deck again.
