In my last couple of blogs I have been talking about building a platform as a writer. It is the first step toward marketing anything you wish to sell. It is also what can bring in more readers and subscribers.
In today’s blog we are going to be looking at how you build a platform through a website or blog. Social media is one of the best ways to do this but next in line is your personal blog or website.
Ideally, you should purchase your own domain name. You will have to first check and see if someone already owns it. But even if you can’t use your first and last name, there are ways you can get around this.
For instance, there are many sites where you can build a website for free and still incorporate some of your name into it. Try to get your name into the url address as much as possible. You want your name to be out there.
An author’s website is a great idea. You can include some of your work, indicate the services you offer (such as resume writing, proofreading, editing, etc.) and share with the world anything else you feel they need to know about you.
Blogs can also help in building your platform. When you produce weekly content through a blog, you can begin to build a subscriber list. The more subscribers you have, the bigger your platform.
That will be appealing to publishing companies when you send in a proposal for a book. I can guarantee you that virtually every publishing company wants to know if you have a platform and what that looks like.
If you have just five subscribers, that won’t look very impressive. So as a writer you need to first focus on building your readership and increasing the number of followers you have on social media.
