Building Your Homeschool Community (Part II)

In my previous post, I described the different types of homeschooling communities I belong to and expressed my desire to create a community here on families.com. Here is my proposal:

Families.com has an awesome forums structure. The discount and coupon people use it heavily, and I would like for us (those interested in homeschooling) to utilize it in very much the same way.

If you go to the families.com forums, and scroll down to the Parenting section you will find homeschooling tucked in there among the other topics.

I strongly encourage you to participate in the families.com homeschooling forum. It is less than buzzing right now, but with just an effort, we (you, me, and other homeschoolers) could make it a valuable resource. I realize there are other homeschooling boards all over the internet, but a using a homeschooling forum through the familial setting of families.com would certainly be a gentler, safer place. In order to participate, a person would have to register with families.com where anti-social behavior tends to be cleaned up rather quickly. So go over to the forums right now and try it. Pick your favorite topic and leave me a quick note… go ahead. Do it now!

If you need a little more guidance, here is a quick thread outline:

Free Educational Resources

Ask Andrea About homeschooling

What does a typical day look like?

What about socialization

How do I know it’s for us?

Spelling Lists:

Homeschooling on the road

How do you do it?

Why do you do it?

You can even raise your own issues like:

URGENT!! Campaign for the Right to Homeschool

Or start your own threads like:

Schooling of four:

Could homeschoolers energy be better spent in the schools?

These are just a few of the threads that you can participate in, in the forums. I really want to hear from you and feel that this is a safe place to build a community where you can keep up with issues and share your experience. Go on, try it.
