Not all bulk food is created equal. If you buy the wrong kind, you may wind up increasing your grocery budget instead of slashing it. Here are several types of food where bulk buying can really help you save.
Cereals and Grains
Any kind of grain product in its purest or almost purest form is usually a great deal when you buy it in bulk. This is especially true for organic grains. I usually pay $28.48 for a 25 pound bag of organic white flour. That is about $1.14 a pound. In the local store here, a three-pound bag of organic flour (when you can find it) costs $6.89. That amounts to almost $2.30 a pound!
Oatmeal is another great grain to buy in bulk. You can prepare a quick breakfast with it in minutes, and it tends to fill you up much better than cold cereal does. The instant stuff costs about five times more than plain oats, and what is crazy is that you can easily make your own flavored instant oatmeal from regular bulk oatmeal for just pennies.
You’ll save money on cold cereal in bulk, too, but just not as much.
Yeast
If you make your own bread (and you should, since it takes only pennies to produce a loaf at home), your best bet is to buy your yeast in bulk. You can portion it out and freeze what you aren’t immediately using.
Canned Tuna and Chicken
You can really save when you purchase canned tuna and canned chicken in bulk. They are easy ways to add in some protein into the family diet, from sandwiches to casseroles. The bulk price on these items plus the relatively long shelf life may them a good bulk food purchase. With name brand tuna, you’ll pay about half of the cost in bulk as you would purchasing the cans individually.
