Business Marketing 101: Creating a Portfolio

In this blog we are going to be looking at the benefits to creating a portfolio. Depending on the nature of your home business, this could be a great way to market your work.

I remember when I used to serve on the interview committee at my children’s school. I enjoyed being part of the process and was always impressed with teachers who brought in a portfolio of their work. You can talk about your work and what you do but showcasing it through a portfolio takes it another step.

There is a lot of creativity that can go into a portfolio. Using the example of a teacher, they would include lots of pictures of projects they had done. Pictures are a great way to show a visual example of what you have accomplished.

Let’s say you are a Pampered Chef representative. You could put together a portfolio showcasing your recipes. Not only could you include the recipes themselves but pictures of the food items.

If you are a professional organizer you could include pictures of closets and rooms that you have organized. If you are a party planner, pictures from those events. In almost any type of job, pictures can be used in a portfolio.

In addition, a portfolio is a great way to show off certificates, awards and letters of commendation that you have received. But don’t forget to include your resume. That is an important component to your portfolio.

If you can include examples of your work, you should. For instance, a writer might include samples of writing that has been published. You might have press releases, advertising copy or reports.

If you have designed brochures or newsletters, include those. And don’t forget to include any testimonials you may have received from previous clients.

A portfolio can be very comprehensive and include additional things such as a list of your qualifications, your objectives or a list of your accomplishments. It’s really up to you how much you include in it.

A portfolio is a great way to market your work and a wonderful way to impress someone in an interview.
