Utter Clutter Tips

bathroomAll of the rooms in your house need careful attention to avert the disorganized onslaught of the clutter bogeyman. The bathroom, recreation area and laundry room have their own special little problems. Let’s look at some of them now, that is, if you dare.

The Bathroom
One rule of thumb to remember when dealing with bathroom clutter is that the more storage space you provide, the more likely you are to clutter it up. Get rid of those bottles and containers that you do not use on a daily basis. No one person needs three different types of shampoo and four different brands of conditioner. Attack, consolidate and throw out the rest!
Check the expiration date on those items in your medicine cabinet and replace those that have expired. (It’s too bad we can’t do the same with nasty relatives and recalcitrant houseguests.)
Cut down on odor from your bathroom wastebasket by leaving a paper towel soaked in fabric softener inside.

The Laundry Room
To save space in your laundry room, attach a wooden ironing board to the inside of the door. You may have to shorten the board, depending on the length of the door. Remove the leg from the square end of the board and screw that end into the door at a comfortable height using a large hinge. Trim the other leg to match the height of the hinged end and you have a convenient, foldaway ironing board.

The Recreation Room
Rec rooms are made to be lived in but they don’t have to be messy. Consider using throw rugs and scatter cushions. Also use furniture pieces that can double as storage: for example, wooden trunks as coffee tables and baskets for toys. When designing your Rec room, consider running the paneling sideways rather than up and down, as this will render the illusion of a much larger room.
