I like to use Amazon.com whenever I can for purchases. In general I have found that their prices tend to be about the same or lower than other places I might like to shop, and the site sells literally everything so I can truly purchase everything I need all at once without having to make several charges on my credit card bill or search through tons of different websites.
A few weeks ago Amazon proved to me that they didn’t sell “everything” when they launched their new grocery section. When I had originally stated everything it never crossed my mind that anyone would want to purchase their groceries over the internet.
The grocery section of Amazon currently sells over 14,000 non-perishable items that can be purchase and then sent to your door free of shipping charges. Fascinated I did a good bit of browsing on the site, and was very impressed with their selection, as well as their prices.
Most of the items that I typically purchase at the grocery store were priced a good 30-40% cheaper than they are at my local market, the downside you have to purchase them in bulk. Everything from the Amazon store has to be purchases in what I imagine are case quantities. What that means is, you may get a steal on the blueberry muffin mix, but you’ll have to purchase it 12 boxes at a time to take advantage of the savings.
I tend to purchase groceries daily, and make decisions on what I’ll be eating in the car on the way to the store. I’m not sure the Amazon grocery would ever be for me. For large families who go through tons of food, and have the room to store it this could be great. You’ll have to be able to wait from the time you buy to when it arrives at your doorstep, but in most cases that might be worth it.
Groceries on the internet is a fascinating concept to me in general. I wonder at what point that will just be the accepted way we do things. I have a friend in New York who always buys her groceries online from a local grocery store. She shops from her desk at work and the groceries are delivered to her doorstep shortly after she arrives home.
