Believe it or not, you can get a nice Christmas tree when you buy a used one. Most people debate about whether to by a live or an artificial tree. If artificial is your choice, then do consider getting one that has been pre owned. You’ll save a lot of money.
Current artificial trees can cost $150 or more. A good used Christmas tree can cost you $10 or less. So you can see where the math works out here.
The first place to shop for a used artificial Christmas tree is your local thrift store. Because Christmas trees take up a lot of floor space, then are often priced very cheaply. In fact, these trees can be so inexpensive that you may want to pick up more than one! Imagine having a formal and elegant Christmas tree in the living room and another more cozy, rustic or kid-decorated tree in the family room.
I found that private thrift stores have better deals than those chain thrift stores. If your favorite stores don’t have any trees, ask if you can leave your name and phone number. They may just be happy to call you when a Christmas tree comes in.
Another place to find a used Christmas tree is through an add, either in the newspaper or online. Craigslist usually has a few Christmas trees for sale when the owners are upgrading or moving.
Many used trees start to look tired after a few years if they aren’t stored properly, so make sure that you inspect used trees. Many used trees may be older models that aren’t prelit. Personally I like the old fashioned, assemble it yourself Christmas trees. It makes for a family event. Plus, if a light goes out on a pre-lit tree, it can be difficult and sometimes impossible to replace.
