Buried at the bottom of my sock drawer lay a few pairs of socks that I consider my last resorts. These are white sport socks that I picked up at a sports related outlet store.
I thought that I was getting a good deal. The socks were reasonably priced. They were plain, but I wasn’t looking for anything fancy, just something to keep my feet warm when walking around on our hardwood floors. As you can guess, the socks didn’t quite fit the bill, er the foot.
You see, most of the time I am fine with irregular clothing and home goods. The irregularity is often hard to even find. There may be a single dropped stitch, a label missing, an off color or some other minor reason that the manufacturer decided that the product was only good for the outlet.
But these socks of mine, well they were missing heels. Yup, that is right. The socks were more like tubes you slip over your feet. That is about as irregular as it gets.
I’m still sticking with wearing them, but I’m tempted to do a number of other things, such as cut off the tips and use them as arm protectors for finger painting or as pipe warmers for the plumbing.
I’ve learned a lesson here. Carefully examine any irregular clothing that you might buy. In my case, the socks came prepackaged, so I was reluctant to check them too closely. But I should have asked the manager to open a package that I would then buy if the socks were, well, ones containing heels.
Irregular clothing can sometimes vary in standard sizes. Sometimes a wrong label gets put on the wrong garment. So you may be bringing home what you think is a size medium, only to find out that it is actually a size small. Try on clothing, or at least hold it up for comparison when you shop.
