Laurie Berkner’s clear voice and bouncy curls have graced children’s music for nearly a decade now. “Buzz Buzz” is the second album that she released. This CD contains Laurie classics such as “Bumblebee (Buzz Buzz),” for which the album is named, “Pig on Her Head,” and “Monster Boogie,” the video for which can be seen on NOGGIN. “Buzz Buzz” offers a great collection of Laurie’s originals, as well as her own arrangements of classic children’s songs.
Laurie’s songs are so much fun to listen to and sing. “Monster Boogie” is a favorite of my nephew. He likes when Laurie sings about the monster’s teeth being green. He also likes to stomp along to the beat. We have a lot of fun dancing together to this one. We also like “Popcorn Calling Me” because of the popping sounds in the background. My daughter’s favorite song on this CD is “Pig on Her Head” because she likes to imitate all of the different animal sounds. She laughs and claps while she does the noises.
The classic songs are well-done by Laurie as well. I like her version of “Erie Canal” because it’s a little more up-beat than other versions that I have heard. One of the songs included on this CD is called “Rum Sum Sum.” When I listened to this track it sounded vaguely familiar, although I couldn’t figure out where I had heard it. It is a South African traditional and Laurie adds some of her own words to help describe the hand movements that go along with it.
My favorite song on this CD is “Clean It Up.” I think this song is a great way to teach kids to clean up their own messes. When Laurie sings, “You can make it fun to do and your friends can help you too,” you can hear in her voice that she is smiling. There is even one line in the song that tells kids that your parents can help, too. This is a perfect lesson in co-operation and responsibility in just a simple song.
