Camping with a Baby

A favorite outdoor activity for millions of people is camping. However, for some reason families with babies think camping trips need to be put on hold. The truth is with proper equipment and care, even small babies can enjoy time outdoors. Keep in mind that newborns would not do as well although some people even taken the tiny ones. If you have any concern or question, just talk to your baby’s pediatrician for recommendations.

When taking a baby on a camping trip, probably the two most important items are food and diapers. Even if your baby were to go through six to eight diapers a day, we recommend you increase that, expecting to go through 10, perhaps 12. For food, you want to choose powdered formula that can be mixed with bottled water, or prepackaged formula. That way, you do not have to mess with keeping other types of formula cold, while also reducing risk of bacteria exposure.

Of course, you will also need extra baby wipes, as well as a garbage bag that can be used for dirty diapers and clothes. Remember, many baby wipes are multipurpose, meaning they not only help with a dirty bottom, but clean clothes can also be used for wiping spit up, cleaning up dirty feet and sticky hands, and so on. In addition, bring more clothing than what you would normally use in a single day. Now, if the baby is little, say up to six months, then he or she is not going to get very, dirty but for older babies, they will likely want to touch and play with about everything.

It is also important that all babies have proper sun block lotion. Keep in mind that even when small babies are in the shade, their skin is exceptionally sensitive. Therefore, it is important to provide protection, using a product specially formulated for baby’s skin. The bottom line is that you can go camping with babies, even small babies but to make your trip successful, you want to do everything possible to make the baby comfortable and of course safe.

Because there are fires, bugs, rocks, hills, and other items that could be potential for injury, it is imperative that someone watch the older baby at all times. To help you can take the playpen, which could also double as a crib for sleeping, as well as a place to keep a better eye on the baby. Then, your camping trip would be a perfect time to invest in a backpack carrier for the baby. With this piece of equipment, you could enjoy daytime hikes or simply keeping baby close while you do other activities.
