Can you Knit?

If you can knit it is possible for you to start your business or at least a sideline from your hobby. I have a friend how makes beautiful scarves and I have tried to get her to start her own business. Her concerns were who to sell to, where to sell, and how would she market herself. All valid concerns but none should keep you from pursing making a living or adding in another stream of income using your hobby.

First, you need to calculate how much it costs you to make the items you can successfully make. You will want to consider the cost of yarn, the different types of yarn, how many different colors you will use, other supplies and your time. A scarf would run from my friend’s calculations about $20-$25. She was concerned that would be cost prohibitive but research has proven many are happy to pay that amount for a custom, one of a kind, handmade scarf. You see to make it more fun you can offer your clients a choice of colors to chose from and knit style.

Secondly, you will need to market yourself. After all, all the research on business development will be useless without the right clientele. You can sell your items on Etsy. If you know any bloggers you can ask them to do reviews and/or giveaways. You can sell ads on blogger sites. Develop a Facebook page dedicated to your business and tell everyone on your personal Facebook page. Let people know at your current place of employment that you are now selling your creations. Make sure they know how long items take so they can order in the proper time frame. Your best advertisement will be your friends and family. So make everyone a little something to wear around. Give your creations away as gifts.

Thirdly, do not give up. You will most likely not develop a booming business in a matter of days. It may be slow going at first. All businesses take time to develop. Have a casual attitude and enjoy the process. Be thankful with every client and in time your passion will become another stream of income or maybe more!
