Walk in closets are a dream come true for many homeowners (especially women). I wouldn’t buy another home that doesn’t have at least one. Walk in closets come in many shapes and sizes, but the shape doesn’t make as much difference to most people as the size does.
The problem with walk in closets is that they are way too easy to pack full of stuff, sometimes to the point where you can’t walk in so easily any more. If you have seasonal gear in there and bring it out when needed, does the space it once occupied quickly fill up with other items? It would make sense to put last season’s gear there as you bring this season’s out, but I’m talking about other odds and ends that seem to find their way into that area.
It helps if you can create “centers” within your closet, especially for all the stuff that you don’t use very often. If you set up a separate section for each season, you’ll avoid filling up spaces intended for other things.
Also, it’s good to avoid the habit of stashing things in the closet when cleaning. Don’t just throw things in there or pile stuff up in the walkway. Make a space for each item that you wish to keep in your walk in closet. If that means removing something else then so be it. Consistent purging will help you keep the area neat and make it easier not only to walk in but also to find whatever is you’re looking for at the time.
It’s easy to ignore the closet, since you can just stuff things in there and close the door, out of sight, out of mind. Yet, when it comes time to store more things or find something, you realize that all that stuffing wasn’t such a great idea. Keeping order is much simpler than pulling everything out to start over or having to reorganize constantly just to get your foot in the door.
