Candy Hang-Overs

I wrote the other day (with great glee and jubilation) about the onset of the “candy season”—Halloween seems to signal the start of the season of sweets for me and I actually ache and crave those chocolatey little morsels. But, fast forward a couple days and now that I have picked up more candy wrappers than a sanitation worker, and I’m starting to have some doubts…

Candy wrappers in the washing machine, candy wrappers on the counter, and most annoying of all—candy wrappers in the candy bowl. The four of us (and our perpetual extras) have definitely been eating our share of the great October candy binge. I eat bits of candy this time every year that I haven’t eaten since this time LAST year. Maybe…we’ve just about had enough.

I was talking with a colleague who has two small children and he revealed the organized way they distribute and parcel out the candy in his house. I remember those days when I actually thought I had some control! Now, with the “big ones” I don’t have much say at all and have to rely on their developing common sense and self-control for moderation (I think they are doing a better job than I am). My kids’ personalities totally come out in the way they handle their candy—there is the one who gives away everything she doesn’t like and then is perfectly content with a smaller, manageable batch; there is the one who carefully saves and allows himself only a few pieces a day—he’ll still have candy next May I tell you; and then there is the one who consumes it all in a couple days and is perfectly happy to move on to the next holiday adventure.

We’re hitting the sugar crash, however, we need a little respite so we can work up an appetite for Thanksgiving…
