I’ve always found it strange when mothers and daughters are at odds. I know it is probably close minded, but I had a wonderful relationship with my mother and the fact that she is gone now only makes it more difficult for me to understand when I hear about celebrities like Jennifer Aniston and Tori Spelling being on the outs with their mothers.
But, after reading the latest news, I think I may be starting to understand, at least in Tori’s case. If Candy Spelling is really trying to reconcile with daughter Tori like she claims from time to time, she certainly seems to be going about it the wrong way.
Candy did an interview Thursday with a Massachusetts radio station and said probably the most horrible thing a daughter could hear. Candy implied that television mogul Aaron Spelling died of a broken heart after Tori abandoned the family.
Her exact words were “It was sad because that’s what killed my husband actually. He just didn’t want to live after that. You know, he had done everything … he could possibly do for his daughter and she wanted no part of him once he couldn’t do anything for her.”
Candy claims she doesn’t know why Tori quit speaking to herself, Aaron, and brother Randy, but the estrangement lasted four or five years until after Aaron’s death.
Candy and Tori have bonded, and then separated again over the past years. While Candy has seen grandson Liam, she claims to have not seen granddaughter Stella.
I am thinking that with statements like she made this week, the kids may be in college before Candy gets to see them again! Needless to say, her comments are the fodder of many blogs.
Candy tried to do damage control, telling the Huffington Post “I didn’t intend to create headlines. I was asked a question about my daughter not speaking with my family, and I answered truthfully. My husband was very ill, and he had stopped eating and taking liquids. He called Tori on a daily basis, and never stopped asking if Tori had returned his call. We had to say no every day.”
In case you were wondering what headline she was referring to, it read “Candy Spelling: Tori’s Actions Killed My Husband Aaron Spelling.”
True, she didn’t write that but the words to formulate that thought came out of her mouth and once you say something that cruel and unkind, especially about your own daughter, it is hard to backtrack.
