I realized this past week that my body is completely trained and conditioned. Or, perhaps it is my brain that is conditioned and it tells my body that come the end of October, it is time to start expecting the annual onslaught of candy. Yes, I’m craving chocolate—little wrapped morsels of all sorts of chocolate—it doesn’t have to be fancy and expensive, my body just knows it is candy time—and mine is not the only body in my household reacting to this conditioning either!
About two weeks ago, all three of my kids starting asking me, “Isn’t it time you were getting some candy?” Of course, we’ve been through a few bags of M& M’s and candy corn since then and we are all totally craving more! It is so strange because we can go almost an entire year without really craving or thinking about candy and when October hits (and through January 1st) candy suddenly becomes a frequent item on the shopping list.
As a matter of fact, I went to the movies this past weekend with a friend and I’m normally quite content with my little bag of popcorn, but when I saw that candy counter, I just couldn’t get those chocolate peppermint patties out of my mind. Just as the opening credits were rolling, I had to sneak out and buy a box since I knew I wasn’t going to be able concentrate thinking about all that sugary chocolate sitting only yards away.
I suppose it is to be expected—years and years of seasonal habit and physical training has led my brain and body to expect that this is the time of year for consuming candy. I could try to fight it, but really why? Isn’t a full candy dish (and a piece or two or home-made fudge) part of the fun of these last few months of the year?
